In the beginning, I studied this new environment and watched what some of the best were doing to actually attract people to them.

First, let me tell you that the majority of people don't realize that the constant self indulgent promoting doesn't get them more followers. In fact, people will stop following you when you're just pushing something or try to sell something.

In many ways, traditional networking rules will apply. The more you give, the more you receive. Offer suggestions to save someone time, money or make their life easier.

Reach out to help someone and be involved with what they do. Look for ways you can promote someone else. Share links and information that you think would benefit your audience of followers.

Avoid posting information over and over again within only a few seconds of each other. You will clog up their Twitter stream and could be viewed as a spammer. It's not necessary to shout out your promotional offers constantly, however on occasion you can mention what you're working on in a subtle fashion without appearing like you're selling directly.

Find other people you can relate to and spend time getting to know them. If you feel a strong connection, send them a direct message so you can meet them offline.

Some of the best ways to bring people to you is to share more about yourself and what you do. If you do any blogging, make sure to include a link to it every time you post a blog.

If you find helpful articles or other resources, make sure to share those as well.

Above all, make sure to respond to any interaction you receive and let them know that you are a real person at the other end of your Twitter user ID. I'm not a fan of the robots that send out automated information or a service that looks for people for you to follow. However, I know of several people that use them with some success.

In my opinion, if you are on Twitter to expand and grow your network, it still comes down the relationship you foster, nurture and cultivate. Nothing mechanical can ever do that, only us humans.

Be considerate, engaging and resourceful whenever possible. Provide something complimentary or FREE to get more responses. You'll have more people stay with you and look forward to receiving your tweets!
