Speaking to organizations and clubs works for just about any product or service but many business owners are unclear about the process.

What to speak about:
Your objective is to provide valuable, beneficial information that serves your audience. Create a talk around the results of using your product or service rather than about your product or service itself.
If you own a specialty food business talk about the health benefits of chocolate or garlic or debunk an old wives tale about an ingredient. If you own a carpet company talk about saving money on heating bills or tell the story behind the months it takes to create an oriental rug.

5 Overlooked Speaking Opportunities:

Retailers:
Managers for many retail outfits struggle to find ways to motivate and inspire their teams. Weekly or daily meetings require hours of planning and a constant flow of fresh ideas. Locate a few retailers that compliment your product or service and offer to speak to them on a Saturday morning before opening. Furniture showrooms are one example

Corporate Offices:
Offer to do a Lunch 'n Learn program in the cafeteria or a small conference room. A solution for stress relief can be geared toward health care workers, insurance firms or any organization suffering from layoffs. Get creative.

Women's Clubs
: Consider hobby groups that welcome an off-topic speaker. The garden club might welcome tips about preventing dry skin or the latest info on the benefits of SPF-infused clothing. A talk on how to prevent neck, hand or knee strain could be of interest to this group.

Small Groups:
All kinds of programs are held in church facilities and libraries. Everything from weight loss to programs for job searchers to personal growth. Check the office for a schedule and the name of the facilitator.

Church Groups:
Particularly, the wives of men's groups e.g. the Doe Club members are the wives of the Elks and many welcome speakers for meetings.

Each club, group or service organization has its own protocol for speakers. Comply with their guidelines, be friendly and stick to their time lines, if you do you might be invited back or be put on their approved speaker list.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by speaking to a variety of groups. Call and ask if they use non-member speakers. Have fun with it and your business will grow from exposure and reputation-the good kind.
