Whether you're just starting out with LinkedIn or you've been using it for awhile, pay attention to these four features when building and revising your profile:

· Professional header. Many headers simply contain a title and company name, which are easily passed over. Create a header that is descriptive of what you do and who you help. Also consider including your website address if there is space. Your target market will be able to more easily connect with you.

· Update box. When you use the update box, your connections will easily see your latest activities in the home page of their LinkedIn profile plus with the network updates to which they subscribe. The update box can let your network know about a conference you're attending, or a product or service you're promoting. A good rule of thumb is to use the update box frequently, but only promoting products and services about 20% of the time.

· Photo. Your photo helps create a more personal connection with your target market. Without a photo, you risk losing credibility. For example, if someone in your target market is searching for products and services you offer, there will most likely be a lot of profile entries returned. That person may then sort out any entries where the offering doesn't fit the need. Of the remaining, that person is more likely to make an initial connection with the profile where there is a warm, professional-looking photo.

· Summary. LinkedIn has a lot of areas for professional experience, much like a resume. But the summary section is one place where many people will look to first, so take the opportunity to tell your compelling story. Place yourself in the shoes of your target market. If your read your summary, would you be compelled to get to know that person better? Keep your summary professional, but conversational. You may also include toward the bottom an invitation to opt into your website.

A thriving network allows solo professionals to build relationships of trust and credibility, a key to becoming booked solid with ideal clients.
